What exactly travels after death?

First Important Truth

Ātma does not travel.

  • It is everywhere.
  • It is unchanging.
  • It is not born.
  • It does not die.

Just like space does not travel when a pot breaks.

2️⃣ What Dies?

Only the physical body dies.

Body = made of five elements
It returns to nature.

3️⃣ What Actually Travels?

What continues is the subtle body (Sūkṣma Śarīra).

This subtle body contains:

  • Mind (manas)
  • Intellect (buddhi)
  • Ego (ahamkara)
  • Impressions (vasanas)
  • Karma

This subtle body + reflected consciousness = Jīva

That Jīva continues.

4️⃣ Analogy to Understand

💡 Bulb and Electricity

  • Electricity = Ātma (does not move)
  • Bulb breaks = physical death
  • Current flows to another bulb = rebirth

Electricity did not travel.
Connection shifted.

5️⃣ Another Analogy (Given in the Bhagavad Gita)

Like a person changing clothes:

Old body → dropped
New body → taken

But the wearer (Jīva with subtle body) continues.

6️⃣ Step-by-Step What Happens at Death

  1. Physical body stops functioning.
  2. Prana (life force) withdraws.
  3. Mind + vasanas detach.
  4. According to karma, suitable womb/environment is found.
  5. New body forms.
  6. Same vasanas continue.

That continuity of tendencies is why:

  • Talents appear early.
  • Fears appear without clear reason.
  • Attractions differ between people.

7️⃣ When Does This Stop?

When:

  • All desires end
  • Ego dissolves
  • Ignorance is destroyed
  • One realizes “I am Ātma”

Then:

  • Subtle body dissolves
  • No rebirth
  • No traveling

This is moksha.

🔹 Very Simple Summary

Body dies.
Ātma never dies.
Mind + karma continue.
That continuation is Jīva.

When ignorance ends → Jīva merges in awareness → No rebirth.
