According to Sathya Sai Baba, selfless service (Seva) is one of the fastest ways to purify the mind and burn karma.
Let’s understand how he connects Seva with karma and liberation.
1️⃣ Why Karma Binds the Jīva
He said karma binds because of:
- Ego (“I am the doer”)
- Desire for result
- Attachment to outcome
When you act with:
- Pride
- Expectation
- Selfish motive
New karma is created.
2️⃣ What is Seva According to Him?
Seva is:
- Serving others without expecting reward
- Seeing God (Ātma) in everyone
- Acting with love, not ego
He often said:
“Hands that help are holier than lips that pray.”
For him, service was not social work alone —
it was spiritual practice.
3️⃣ How Seva Burns Karma
When you serve with:
- No ego
- No desire for praise
- No expectation
Then:
- Mind becomes pure
- Ego becomes weak
- Desires reduce
- Old karmic tendencies fade
Why?
Because selfishness is the root of karma.
When selfishness goes, bondage weakens.
4️⃣ His Simple Analogy
He compared karma to dirt on a cloth.
- Cloth = Mind
- Dirt = Ego and desires
- Soap = Selfless service
- Water = Love
By repeated washing (service with love),
the cloth becomes clean.
When mind is pure,
the reflection of Ātma becomes clear.
5️⃣ Final Stage
When service is done in this understanding:
“I am not serving others.
I am serving the same Atma in all.”
Then:
- Doership disappears
- Jīva identity weakens
- Only Ātma awareness remains
That is liberation.
Very Simple Summary
Selfish action → Creates karma
Selfless action → Reduces karma
Pure love + no ego → Leads to realization
