Ātma (Atman)
According to the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita:
Ātma is:
- Pure consciousness (Chaitanya)
- Eternal (never born, never dies)
- Unchanging
- Witness (Sākshi)
- Independent
It is your real Self, beyond body and mind.
In Advaita Vedanta, Ātma = Brahman (Absolute Reality).
2️⃣ Jīva (Individual Soul)
Jīva is the individual living being.
It is:
- Ātma associated with body + mind + ego
- The experiencer of pleasure and pain
- The doer (kartā) and enjoyer (bhoktā)
- Subject to birth and death (in appearance)
Jīva feels:
- “I am this body”
- “I am happy”
- “I am suffering”
This identification creates bondage.
3️⃣ Simple Analogy
☀ Sun and Reflection
- Sun = Ātma
- Reflection of sun in water = Jīva
The sun is one and unaffected.
But the reflection shakes if the water shakes.
Similarly:
- Ātma never changes.
- Jīva appears to change because mind changes.
4️⃣ Key Difference Table
| Ātma | Jīva |
|---|---|
| Pure consciousness | Reflected consciousness |
| Eternal | Appears to be born and die |
| Witness | Doer and experiencer |
| Free | Bound by karma |
| Same in all beings | Individual identity |
5️⃣ According to Different Schools
- Advaita Vedanta → Jīva and Ātma are ultimately the same; difference is due to ignorance (avidyā).
- Vishishtadvaita → Jīva is a part/mode of Brahman but not identical.
- Dvaita → Jīva and God are eternally different.
Final Simple Understanding
Ātma = Real Self (pure awareness)
Jīva = Ātma + ignorance + body-mind identification
When ignorance ends, Jīva realizes:
“I was always Ātma.”
