Sathya Sai Baba explained the difference between Ātma and Jīva in a very simple and devotional way.

1️⃣ Ātma According to Sathya Sai Baba

He said:

  • Ātma is divine consciousness
  • It is the same in everyone
  • It is eternal, pure, and unchanging
  • It is God within

He often said:

“You are not the body. You are not the mind. You are the Atma.”

For him:

  • Ātma = Divine Reality
  • Ātma = God principle present in all beings

2️⃣ What is Jīva According to Him?

He explained:

  • Jīva is Ātma identified with body and mind.
  • When the pure Atma reflects in the mind, it appears as individual personality.
  • Because of ego (ahamkara), the Jīva thinks:
    • “I am this body.”
    • “I am separate.”

This false identification creates suffering.

3️⃣ His Famous Analogy

💡 Electricity and Bulbs

  • Electricity = Ātma
  • Bulbs = Bodies
  • Light in each bulb = Jīva experience

Electricity is one.
Bulbs are many.
Light appears different based on bulb type.

But electricity itself is unchanged.

4️⃣ Why Does Jīva Suffer?

According to Sathya Sai Baba:

  • Due to ignorance (Avidya)
  • Due to attachment and ego
  • Due to forgetting one’s true nature

When ego disappears, Jīva realizes:

“I am the Atma. I am divine.”

5️⃣ His Main Teaching

He emphasized:

  • Self-inquiry
  • Love for all
  • Service to others
  • Seeing the same Atma in everyone

He taught that realization is not becoming something new —
it is removing ignorance and discovering what you already are.

Simple Summary

Ātma = Divine, pure, universal consciousness
Jīva = Individual self under illusion
Realization = Knowing “I am the Atma”
